A famine emigrant from the Tuam area Dick Dowling became a publican in Houston, Texas, and a lieutenant in the confederate army. In charge of an artillery battery he successfully defeated a superior force of the union army in the naval battle of Sabine Pass. A monument to his memory can be seen in Hermann Park , Houston, Texas.
